Great Articles”

Microphones are small audio equipment that amplify your voice.

Since these devices mostly work with electromagnetic waves, frequencies and cables, therefore there is a common question regarding them.

The question is “Are microphones waterproof?”

Well, there are some microphones that are waterproof but most of them are not.

The reason for microphones not being waterproof is obvious that microphones are technically electronic devices.

Most electronic devices are not waterproof.

There are some factors to know about the waterproof factor of microphones.

Moreover, you can also use a waterproof microphone.

To know about such stuff, read further.

You will also learn more about the question of microphones being waterproof.

Why Does Water Damage Microphones?

The biggest question here is why does water damage microphones.

It is because mostly daily used water isn’t pure.

It has some impurities and elements that conduct electricity.

The elements conduct electricity to places where it shouldn’t be due to which electrical shocks occur in the microphone.

But if your microphone is turned off, water doesn’t damage your microphone.

It is because there is no electricity in the microphone that the elements or minerals can conduct.

Therefore, it is suggested to turn off your microphone immediately if you happen to spill water on it or you drop it in water.

But make sure that the device is fully dry and doesn’t contain any elements that can conduct electricity when you turn it on.

Pure Water And Microphones

Talking of impure water, you should also note that pure distilled water is safe for microphones.

It is because pure water doesn’t have such minerals that conduct electricity.

So if you are sure that the water is pure and you spill it on your microphone, you don’t even need to turn your microphone off or disconnect it.

Battery Microphones And Water

The problem comes when your microphone is a Bluetooth one meaning that it is wireless.

Spilling water on a Bluetooth microphone is a disaster because the battery inside already has electricity conducting elements.

So, even if the microphone is turned off, make sure you don’t spill any water on the microphone unless they are water resistant.

Does Humidity Affect Microphones?

The answer to this question is very simple.

Humidity that is below 70% doesn’t affect your microphone.

Humidity only affects microphones when it exceeds the normal percentage i.e., 70%.

Even then it isn’t as harmful as water.

It is only harmful when the microphones are subjected to humidity for a long period especially when it is turned on.

If you are to perform somewhere where humidity level is too high and exceeds 70%, keep the microphone turned off until the time comes when you need to use them.

Effect Of Water On Microphones

What can possibly happen to microphones when they are subjected to water and humidity for a long period?

There are various effects of water on microphones. Let’s learn about them!

Rusting And Corrosion

Corrosion and rusting occurs when metal is subjected to water and oxygen for a long period of time.

Most of the microphones are made of metal.

Therefore, water can corrode microphones.

Corrosion can occur to various parts of the microphone such as ribbon diaphragm, magnets, moving coil, output pins etc.

All these parts are made up of metal such as aluminium, brass, steel, copper, e.t.c.

Short Circuit

Short circuit is the biggest danger when microphones are subjected to water.

Short circuit occurs when electricity is conducted to various parts of the microphones.

If you are wearing a microphone and a short circuit occurs in it, it can be extremely harmful for you.

Therefore, it's always better to turn the microphone off if you spill water on it.

A.F Capsule Malfunction

Audio frequency capsules have a lot of electric charge contained in them.

Therefore, if water is subjected to such parts, the quality of the microphone is badly affected

The effects on the microphone are that audio quality drops, output becomes low, and noise crackles.

Waterproof Microphones

There are some microphones that are waterproof.

Such microphones are called hydrophones.

They have special features that make them water resistant.

Such microphones have an IPX 8 and they can work even in 3 feet deep water for up-to 30 minutes.

How To Prepare For A Watery Show?

If you think that the place where you are going to use microphones can pour some rain and there is no shelter, then you should take some precautions.

These precautions are mentioned below

1. Keep A Backup

It is always better to keep a backup microphone even if your microphone claims to be waterproof.

If your microphone stops working while you are using it, you can replace it by the backup microphone quickly.

2. Waterproof The Microphone

You can waterproof the microphone at home. To do it, you can watch the following video:

3. Keep A Backup Track

If you are performing live, keeping a backup track is also a good thing to do.

If the microphones stop working, you can play the backup track and lip sync to it temporarily.

4. Keep A Water Resistant Cover

There are some covers in the market that cover your microphones.

Most of the time such covers are waterproof.

You can also make one by using a balloon.

Ballon is resistant to water and doesn’t allow any water drops to enter into the device.

In the end, I must say that waterproof microphones do exist but most microphones are not waterproof.

It is better to keep water away from microphones especially if your microphones are wireless.

Battery and Bluetooth microphones aren’t water resistant and they should be away from water and excessive humidity in every case.

You can use covers for making microphones temporarily waterproof.

If my microphone is subjected to water, I wouldn’t trust it for next time especially if it’s not a waterproof microphone.

Buy hydrophones for performing under rain.

As far as humidity is concerned, it is only harmful for microphones when it exceeds 70%.

Even then it is not as bad for your microphones as water is.

You can use microphones in humidity without worrying much about them.
