What is a Guitar Speaker?

Simply put a guitar speaker is a loudspeaker that is designed to be used with a guitar amplifier of an electric guitar.

What they do is that they produce the frequency range that is relevant to electric guitars which is about 75Hz to 5kHz.

Most guitar speakers have cones that come in different sizes. There are those that range in size from 6.5 inches to 15 inches.

These cones help in producing the hard and gritty sound associated with rock music.

They are usually made from alnico, ceramic or neodymium which helps in the durability of the speaker.

Most times one or more guitar speakers are usually housed in a cabinet (guitar speaker cabinet) that helps combine the sounds and increases the quality.

Things to consider before making a purchase

There are a couple of things you need to consider before you buy a 10 inch guitar speaker.

While these things are not set in stone, they are usually good tips to ensure that you make the right purchase.

1. How much wattage can it take?

This is perhaps the most important question you need to ask.

Why?

Simply because wattage is the amount of power that the speakers can output.

And you generally want the highest wattage so as to make sure that the output level is okay.

2. Does it have any built in effects?

While this may be solely down to personal preference, you should consider it.

This is because you do not know when you may need to use an effect.

So as an advice, try to go for any model that also comes with some built in effects. This will ensure that if you need it in future then you are not stuck.

3. How durable is it?

Also you need to be sure of the durability. This is an equipment that is definitely going to be used for a long time.

So you want to make sure that it can withstand years of wear and tear.

As a plus, most guitar speakers are made from materials that can last for years without any significant damage to it.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do I choose an amp for my speakers?

Before you go ahead and buy an amp for your speakers, whether a 10 inch or anyone else, there are certain things you need to consider.

Generally you want to pick an amplifier that can deliver power equal to or twice the speakers program or continuous power rating

For example, lets say you have a speaker with a nominal impedance of 8 ohms and a program rating of 350 watts, this will require an amplifier that can produce power of about 700 watts into an 8 ohms load.

2. How do I connect my guitar amp to my speakers?

Most guitar amps can be connected to speakers following the same procedure.

Here is a simple step by step guide to help you get started

  • Make sure the amplifier is switched off and unplugged from the power source
  • Check and make sure the cabinet(s) are switched to mono
  • Connect the speaker cable to the loudspeaker output on the amplifier
  • Connect the other end of the speaker cable to the corresponding impedance input on the cabinet
  • If you are using two mono/stereo cabinets, then you are going to need two speaker connections
  • Set the impedance selector and make sure it is on the right channel
  • If you have issues then you can check for specific model information from the user guides.

3. How to break in a guitar speaker

When you get a brand new out of the box speaker, the tone will subtly shift over the first few hours of playing it.

This is because the fibers within the cone start to relax and become more pliable

Do not worry though

It is perfectly normal and there are even some school of people who believe that this improves the sound, making it more rounded and pleasing to the ear

But there are some people who prefer to speed up this process – this process is called breaking in the speaker

What they do is the deliberately soften up the cone in order to bring the speaker to its optimum state in terms of tonality

You’ll hear about lots of different breaking in techniques.

Some play random noise through their speakers, others prefer to play music through them for many hours.

There’s plenty of debate over the technique to use for break in and how long to do it for, but they all achieve the same end, softening up the cone and rounding out the sound.

Below is our preferred method.

Important Note! Before breaking it in it’s advisable to warm up the speaker gently for a few minutes with low-level playing or background hum.

Break in a speaker with a fat, clean tone: turn up the power amp volume to full, and control the level with the preamp gain.

Use a level that will be quite loud, but not painful in a normal size room.

Have the bass and mid up full, and the treble at least half.

On your guitar, use the middle pick up position (if your guitar has more than one pick up) and play for at least an hour, using lots of open chords, and chunky percussive playing.

This will get the cone moving, and should excite all the cone modes and get everything to settle in nicely.

The speaker’s tone will continue to mature with additional hours of playing, but this will get it most of the way there.

3.How to test your Guitar Amp before you buy

It is obvious right

You need to test your amp before you make a purchase

But how do you do this and is there a working procedure to follow

Here are some tips you can follow when next you want to test your amp

NOTE: Make sure you inform whoever is in the local store that you want to run a test before you buy it

  • Check that the amp is connected into a power source and that the power source is live
  • Find the volume knobs and turn them all the way down – usually anti-clockwise
  • Plug in and flip on the power switch
  • Turn the tone controls – bass, middle and treble – to their midway point
  • Play around and listen

4. How to clean my guitar amp speakers

As with all things you need to clean your guitar amp speakers

But how do you go about cleaning the speaker cones

Most people never give such things any thought but you need to make sure you clean your guitar amp speakers from time to time so it lasts longer for you

Warning: Never spray any product into an amplifier. Do not use any type of spray oil or lubricant to clean the jacks

Here is my simple procedure that I use

  • Use a soft paintbrush and a vacuum cleaner with the nozzle held about an inch or so from the speaker.
  • I usually do this with speakers when I’m overhauling amps, and it makes a noticeable difference to the tone if the dust build-up was really bad.
  • In extreme cases – especially on speakers with very light cones and small coil gaps (eg Celestion Blues) – it can even damage the speaker if the weight of dust build-up on the lower side gets too much.
  • Clean the outside of the cabinet using a clean cotton rag and spray cleaner. Since any liquid getting into the interior of the amplifier can cause damage, never spray the unit with cleaner. Apply cleaner to the rag and then wipe the exterior of the cabinet.
  • Clean the face of the amplifier with the cotton rag, reapplying cleaner if necessary. If the face is particularly dirty, knobs of the amplifier may need to be removed. Turn all knobs completely to the left. Most knobs can be removed with a firm tug, but some knobs may have a set screw securing them to the potentiometer shaft. These set screws will need to be removed. Clean under the knobs as necessary and replace them so their indicators point to the extreme left position.

5. What is speaker sensitivity?

This is simply a measurement of how well a speaker can effectively convert the amplifier power to acoustic energy.

In other words, it is a measurement of how loud the speaker will be for a given amplifier power
